I have just updated to Sonoma 14.1.1 and simultaneously was playing around with the Imap settings in Gmail which hosts my email account, in an attempt to get rid of email 'archive' in mac mail.
Now the email threads in my folders and inbox are completely mixed up with unrelated threads and email recipients. When I 'reply all' to an email in one thread, it replies to a completely different thread and different recipients. The preview and email shown are also completely different emails/threads. Can anyone help???

For problem accounts the go to way to sort things out is to delete the account(s) from the Mail.app, then add it back.

Note—
IMAP accounts stay on the server, so no local loss, when you re-sync
POP accounts download and remove from the server—therefor save your inbox/sent box if you want them
“On My Mac" is just that, local folders you created and moved mail into. So no loss
