Synch library on external hard disk with iPod Classic

Can ANYONE help please with simple instructions as to how to Synch a library on external hard disk with an iPod Classic. I have tried a number of times and have NOT been successful.

I presume if a laptop cannot fit a full iTunes Library then an External Hard Disk is the option. But how do you "marry" the two ie The External Hard Drive with the music library to an empty iPod Classic?

It's driving me nuts, surely someone else has needed to do this before me?

Many Thanks

Have you moved the files for your music to the external drive since adding them to your iTunes Library?

If so, then I assume that iTunes lists all the songs as original file not found when you try to play them and that you see an error message when you Sync with the iPod. That's what you need to sort out.

Consider this: you don't Sync your iPod with an external drive, instead you Sync it with iTunes (on older Macs*, or with Windows PCs) and iTunes looks for the files for those songs in the location that you told it about when you added the songs to your library. So if you moved the files, iTunes looses track of them, hence your problem.

So first of all, how did this happen? Once we know, we can help iTunes match up the files again.

* If you are using a newer Mac, with OS Catalina (10:15) or later, let us know so that we can offer suggestions directed at that OS. (That might not be me, I'm not familiar with Mac's Finder.)
