Same user profile picture across all devices

This did not used to be the case but now when I update my iCloud profile picture it updates across every device I have logged into that same account. This creates a major issue because when I go to use airdrop I honestly can't tell which device is which. I have 3 iMacs, 3 iPhones & 2 iPads so you can see why this can get a bit confusing.

I am aware that is not a new complaint and that they have made this feature work this way (I have sent in a feature request using the form) but I am wondering if anyone else has found a work around to solve it? All the posts I am coming cross are old and don't have any solutions.

There's your problem. Apple doesn't have good support for business. It's products are designed for people who have one of each device.

The only differences I can see between AirDrop are simply bugs. On my iPhone (running iOS 16), it shows my Mac under its actual name, as specified in System Settings > General > About. But the icon is blank. On the Mac, it shows the icon for the phone, but uses the name "iPhone" instead of the correct name that I've assigned in Settings.

The answer is to take a step back and ask why you are doing this in the first place. AirDrop is specifically designed to share between people. All these devices should be using the same iCloud account. You shouldn't ever have to AirDrop anything. It should automatically sync.

That is true as long as you have enough iCloud storage or are willing to pay for more.

Interesting observations @etresoft

That's what the OP found out. Apparently it used to be different and objectively better. I just tested it with my iOS 15 device that I use for software testing. Works great there. It sees other devices by their name and the device is recognized by other devices with its correct name. Apple totally broke this in iOS 16. I'm not running iOS 17. 😄

Also, my Monterey and Big Sur machines still work great too. No missing icon problems. It correctly shows the icon of the computer along with the correct computer name.

<sigh>

Not with my install of Monterey. It shows my avatar.

What is "it"? When discussing any kind of sharing operation, you have to specify what direction you are talking about, and maybe version as well. My Monterey machine does show user avatars of other devices. But my iOS 16 iPhone shows computer images (in a circular background) of local Macs. It shows avatars of other iOS device. The iOS 15 device doesn't show Mac images, but it does show correct names.

PS: I was testing Ian's Ventura desktop question and ran into the exact problem described here. I couldn't tell which Mac was which and Airdropped it to the wrong one first. I should have taken my own advice and used iCloud.

Sonoma is not irrelevant when trying to AirDrop from Macs to other Apple devices.
The behaviour described by the OP is the same in macOS 11, 12, and 13. If you know of some new method in Sonoma to solve the problem, I'm sure the OP would love to hear it.

As I said in an early post, there is none. Which means, Sonoma is relevant by the fact it doesn't work any better than the previous versions, and was the subject of this thread.
