I need to backup my laptop using time machine however I need the admin password which I have forgotten. Is there any way that this can be reset?

Hi. Thanks for your prompt response, however this hasn’t fixed the problem? I can log into the computer , but when I try to use Time Machine (or anything that needs admin permission ) the padlock shows locked and the administrator box needs a password which is not the same as my log in ??? Could it be compromised?
Typically, your login password is the same as your Admin password, so I'm not sure what's happened.
Have you checked Users and Groups in System Settings to see if your user is listed as Admin?
The only other thing that comes to mind is that, perhaps, your computer is (or was?) managed by a company's IT department?
