Safari slow to connect to internet on a Macbook Air with Wifi, but is fine on my Imac

Safari is very slow to connect to sites on wifi, up to 30 seconds per page opening. However the same site opens is split second on Chrome. Also my Imac running on Safari and same wifi has no problem.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 14.1

  1. Click on the Apple menu and choose System Settings > Wi-Fi, then click Details next to your Wi-Fi network.
  2. Click DNS.
  3. Use ‘-’ to remove the existing DNS address.
  4. Click ‘+’ and type 8.8.8.8 Click OK.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

Try this...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

1.1.1.1

9.9.9.9

Apply.

Sorry Sys Prefs haschanged to Sytem Settings, How to fix a DNS problem?

For Ventura and Sonoma DNS settings are in System Settings -> WiFi -> Details -> DNS:

Enter...

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

Not on OS14 now, but have tried to interpret my old advice from Sys Prefs to Sys Settings...

I just bought a new iMac M3 and although it was connecting to the router it didn't have an Internet connection at all on the main network (using Terminal to ping 8.8.8.8 revealed there was no route) and it was very very slow in the guest network (ping response times varying from one ping to the other between 50 and 500 ms).

I logged into the router and went to the page showing connected devices. I selected to show the disconnected ones as well and told the router to forget all of them. After that, the iMac had no problem going to the Internet on both wifi networks, at a good speed (consistant ping response times of ~5 ms), almost as good as the wired Ethernet connection (~2.5 ms).

I hope this can help somebody.

hi thanks for this, sadly I cant find most of the links on network you are suggesting. Is it that I am running Sonoma 14.1.1 and you are seeing them, on an older OS?

There is only one service in the order which is WiFi but it is still extremely slow to move between sites. No problem in Chrome and no problem on my Imac Safari on the same network! Its a quandary.
