Command N not working

I'm using a MacBook Pro with Sonoma (OS 14.1.1) and the Command + N keyboard shortcut is not working.

When there is no window open in Finder, it works. But is there's already another window open, Command + N opens a New Tab.

In order to open a new window, I now must hit Option + Command + N.

I read that one solution may be to unclick "Open folders in tabs instead of new windows" in Finder Settings, but this only reverts the problem: now you can't use Command + T to open a New Tab, because it opens a New Window.

If you are quite used to the shortcuts, you may be able to create your own using the link above. As said by dialabrain, this is how Sonoma behaves.

Try booting into Safe Mode and see what the "New Finder Window" displays as the shortcut. If it now shows "Command N", you have something installed causing the problem.

Install EtreCheck and post the report. Allow Full Disk Access.

The thing is that, on a differenr MacBook Pro, also with Sonoma, the Command+N works just fine.

I tried to create the shortcut myself using the help in the link but it didn't work.

I will share a couple of screenshots of System Settings and the dropdown menu afterwards: as you can see, no shortcut is shown in the dropdown menu.

That's because you tried to override the default shortcut.

Do you know if this change of shortcut is because this MacBook has M2? Because on two other MacBooks Pro (Intel and M1), also with Sonoma, the Command+N works just fine.

You're welcome.

However, I was mistaken. The keyboard shortcut has not changed. I checked Sonoma on my iMac Pro and M1 MacBook Air. It's still "Command N" while in the Finder. I doubt it's because of the M2 but I don't have one to check.
