Locked out of Macbook Air without Filevault password

Hi - I zoomed past the "Filevault" page setting up a refurbished Macbook. I never saw the string of characters or understood I was substituting the Filevault code for my AppleID. Any thoughts on how to regain access are welcome. The Find My Device app doesn't provide an option to unlock and different suggestions using the terminal don't work. My Apple ID is rejected there.

My question is: should I disable FileVault before erasing via this feature, or is that done automatically / not necessary? The support article does not make a comment about FileVault.
