CR3 to DNG converter help please

I have a Canon R6 Mk2 camera which produces CR3 files. I use an older stand alone version of Adobe Light Room (V5.4) which works absolutely fine but wont recognise CR3 files.

The easy option seemed to be downloading the Adobe DNG converter which I did. When I tried to install it said you need Monterey OS12 or later. My Macbook Pro is a 2015 machine and it wont update to this OS. I have tried to find the previous Adobe converter (the current on was only updated this month, November 23) but have struggled to find it. Could anyone please advise if there is a solution or work around, apart from spending a fortune on a new Macbook which again is a brilliant machine with no other requirement to change. I work with Raws for my Landscape and portrait work so Jpegs are not a solution. Thank you.

MacTracker indicates that there were two 2015 MacBook Pros:

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)

Either can upgrade to Monterey, but no further.

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

If you upgrade to Catalina or later (including Monterey):

  • 32-bit applications will break
  • iTunes will go away, replaced by separate applications: What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support
  • Your standalone copy of Lightroom will break, and you'll have to upgrade to one of the Adobe Photography Plans that includes access to Lightroom Classic if you want to keep using something similar to Lightroom v5.4. (I think there is a plan that includes access to Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, and the cloud-based program that now has the "Lightroom" name for $10/month.)

(My understanding is that all of the one-time-purchase versions of Lightroom - including 6.14 - have 32-bit installer and activation code, even when the main application has 64-bit code. Also that Adobe has not updated any of the standalone versions for any other issues that might affect running them under Catalina and beyond.)

As far as I know, Adobe now only makes the DNG Converter available for the most recent three versions of macOS. You can't get versions of the DNG Converter that will run on older versions of macOS – even ones built some time ago that have support for fewer types of Raw files.

This is a bit of a problem given that Adobe says that the DNG Converter is their solution to the problem of offering backwards compatibility for older applications. But it is what it is.

You could try contacting Adobe and asking for an old version of the DNG Converter, but there is no guarantee that they'd give it to you – or that a version old enough to run on your current OS would support the particular type of CR3 Raw files in which you are interested.

just a shot in the dark here, as cr3 and DNG files are pretty specialized, but apparently Photivo might recognize them...anyways, why can't you update to this OS ?? Maybe you could try Big Sur or Catalina, surely it'll do that, plus an older version of Adobe's DNG converter...anyways, onto the Photivo thing (make sure it's the latest, latest version, which does recognize CR3 files)....aww, prairie poop.....I couldn't find the exact screenshot, so I'll send you a link instead,

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. It just goes to show that all these companies put revenue before customer support. Whilst I fully appreciate they need to make money of course, it would seem ridiculous to scrap an absolutely brilliant machine because of software updates. I have thought about changing to a windows machine, but am definitely an Apple fan, ah well, a few things to think about. Thanks again.
