Trash Won't Stay Empty

I recently deleted several files, and every time I try to empty the trash, the files reappear after just a few seconds. None of the files are in use. Has anyone experienced this or know a solution? Thank you!

What I've tried:

  • Restart, full shutdown, etc.
  • Downloading all files from cloud before emptying
  • Putting files back and re-deleting
  • "Delete Immediately" from inside trash
  • Using CleanMyMac to empty trash (says there is nothing there)
  • Forcing empty from Terminal

OK - this is going to sound to stupidly easy, you won't believe it. I have had the same issue - kept deleting, and the files (zero bytes) would keep bouncing back. I tried everything - rebooting, safe mode, Terminal deletes - nada.

Then I thought I would try something ridiculously basic. I put a new folder on the desktop, put some "stuff" in it that I didn't need, then dragged the files (6 of them) out of the trash into this new folder. I then deleted the folder, and then the trash. It's been half an hour, and they haven't bounced back!!!

Good luck - hope this works for you.

Step 1.

"CleanMyMac" is known to cause nothing but issue on the macOS— I would look for an official in-app uninstaller,

it is not needed.

if in doubt search the developers website or contact their: Support/Help/FAQ/Uninstall
