Unless the iPad case is explicitly designed to allow direct contact (or via a very thin membrane) with a second generation Apple Pencil, it will not be suitable for use.

Of available third-party cases that are designed for your iPad Pro, OtterBox an STM are arguably amongst the better options - these manufacturers producing robust cases for iPad and iPad Pro that incorporate Apple Pencil and their charging needs. By example:

  • OtterBox Symmetry Series 360 Elite Case for iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th/6th generation) - Grey

  • DUX PLUS for iPad Pro 12.9″ (6th/5th/4th/3rd gen)

If the cover does not provide access to the magnetic strip on the side of the iPad, there will be no way to pair and charge the Second Generation Apple Pencil. At the very least the area around the magnetic strip would need to be thin and allow the Pencil to attach there. What case exactly are you using?

You can buy the USB-C Apple pencil, and connect it to the USB-C charging port on the iPad for pairing and charging if, again, the case allows for it.

I bought the OtterBox Symmetry Series 360 Elite Case for iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th/6th generation) and it’s not a protective case in anyway and my pencil falls out of the slot constantly.

I bought the

Miesherk Case for iPad Pro 12.9 2022/2021: Military Grade Heavy Duty Shockproof Cover for iPad Pro 12.9 Inch 6th/5th Generation- Pencil Holder on Amazon for $35.99 and it’s one of the best travel protective case.

My grandson dropped my iPad out a moving car and there wasn’t a scratch on my iPad. My pencil was also still in its holder.

If I didn’t have that case I would’ve had to buy a new iPad. Check it out.
