How to add the toolbar on keyboard in imessage

I'm a new iPhone user, having purchased an iPhone 12 IOS 17.1.1 from one of my children. I'm coming from Samsung S8 so I'm still learning all the fine details of how to do things on an iPhone.

My 3 children have a toolbar on their iMessage keyboard that has icons to do several things, but I don't see it and they can't seem to tell me where it is. I can see a plain toolbar on the keyboard in Notes and when I create an email, but there's nothing in iMessages. (The one visible in email is very plain, few options)

They have newer iPhones but they say that they have the toolbar on older model 11 iPhones. The iPhone 12 was reset by my son before sending it to me. I tried adding the Gboard and Swiftkey KBs to this phone but they aren't as good as they were on the S8. I currently have Swiftkey, English-QWERTY and Emoji KBs installed. I have the + sign next to the iMessage reply box
