FCPX - 10.7 crashing regularly?

Just upgraded to FCPX 10.7. First morning. Had four crashes so far. At the end of post on a complicated film. Should I, can I, go back to the previous version of FCP? ... and would only lose a half day's work.

Advice?

Dear Tom,

Success. Blip brought in the file. Low bandwidth, it took a few hours. But it arrived. I moved 10.7 to another drive. And dropped 10.6.10 back into Applications.

Aha ... BEFORE I moved 10.7 to another drive I output an XML of the work I'd done in 10.7 (not related to the main film timeline). And was able to recover everything I did yesterday. Simply pulled the XML back into the Library now opened with your 10.6.10.

Thank you very much for your help. Very much appreciated.

As an aside ... I tried to do an XML of the actual film timeline, but when I opened it in 10.7 ... thinking maybe the XML might fix or work around any corruption ... a pop-up told me there were 'issues' in the file, see attached. So I've gone back to 10.6.10 and will sort out moving to 10.7 once this film is in the can.

All the best, Ben

I just tested the same project on my M1 Pro Laptop (mostly I edit on an Intel iMac) and there is no crashing at all with the same project, on Ventura 13.6.1 with FCP 10.7. However I'm still editing on the iMac having successfully shifted back to 10.6.10

Maybe someone has already mentioned this in the thread, but this seems to be an Intel only problem.

To recover 10.6. This worked for my 2017 iMac. No idea about other machines.

Use Time Machine backup. Go to the Oct/nov section, drag FCP 10.6 on to your desk top. Go to finder and under applications drag FCP 10.7 to the trash and then drag 10.6 to the finder applications window. Delete the trash and restart. Disable auto downloads in Settings - general, otherwise 10.7 will be reinstalled. Hope this helps. Am really surprised that Apple has not issued a patch by now.

Hi everyone,

Coming back to this topic because I've found a fix (for me at least). It seems the constant crashes were caused by media that was linked to iCloud. If you've set-up your Mac to automatically store both your Desktop & Documents folders in the cloud (recent Mac OS feature) then they can take a while to pull files back off the cloud...especially big video files. My guess is this is confusing the **** out of FCPX.

The affected video projects, which relied on iCloud-based files, were characterised by a single red dot instead of the thumbnail in the media library (screenshot attached). In other words - opening a project with a single-red pixel was bound to crash FCPX. Once I moved the root media out of the cloud and back onto my (non-iCloud-linked) HDD, the thumbnail images reappeared and I've had no crashes since.

SO - a solution to try - take the time to move your media onto a physical HDD. You may need to re-link the media once it's completed. It's early days - but stopping iCloud from constantly uploading/downloading the relevant files seems to have prevented my FCPX from crashing. I'd be keen to hear if anyone else has found this solution works.

Thank you Tom for your comments. After experimenting half the night it seems that FCP 10.7 on my computer has trouble handling and transcoding large video files. With smaller files FCP seems to perform OK. 10.7 did not integrate well with IOS and did introduce instability. This has now passed and I am unclear why things improved. Maybe background functions interfering with the transcoding process? I did not have any of the troubles with 10.6. As a doco film maker I deal in very large Log and 'normal' video files. I ran Etrecheck with no major issues identified. Minor ones listed below:

EtreCheckPro version: 6.8.3 (68032)

I will wait a few days to see if Apple sends out a patch to improve FCP 10.7. If not, I may revert to 10.6 as no major library will be impacted. Thank you agin for your great support, Tom.

As a workaround I have found that if I open an 'Untitled' project that is not upgraded, I can get into FCPX and open the upgraded library and work just fine.

Because I have all my files on an external drive this just involves unplugging my external drive, opening FCPX, and then plug the drive in and File -> Open the library that was upgraded.

Not a great situation, but it is allowing me to continue working until the version is patched.

Has anyone dared update again and seen an improvement? I am still riding my 6.10 version (thanks to the marvellous Tom Wolksy), and very reluctant to update to another debacle again!

I used 10.7.1 relatively extensively in the last days of the year, using multiple color corrections, and it did not crash. I even forgot that this used to be an issue.

Also, I did not find any problems with 10.7.1, but as always, zip the existing version before you update, so it's easy to go back if necessary.

If you have the backups for it you should revert to the previous version.

The system drive is slow so you shouldn't really use for large media. Couldn't tell what the other drive is, but you have a Seagate utility.

You're running some obsolete software that's been carried over from old OSs. Probably time for a clean install, migrating users, and rebuilding applications.

Just to finish up my story. After deleting 10.7 and copying over 10.6 from the Time Machine all is now well. Startup and login or now normal as is 10.7. Keep my doco video files on an external drive or two ensured the libraries were unaffected. Hope the old Apple gets its act together soon as none of the new features showed up on my upgrade, only crashes.

Dec 5, 2023 4:20 AM in response to Lukyy07

when editing and clicking on color wheels or color curves, the program crashes.

Many people have made similar reports, and you are one of them. It seems to crash just by dragging a clip in the color inspector or browser.

Any advice on how to upgrade to the oldest version or how to fix it?

If you have a time machine, you can go back to before installing FCP10.7. If you do not have a time machine, you will not be able to obtain the old FCP unless you change to an older macOS.

You should always back up your data and old FCP applications before updating to the latest application.

I'm glad you were able to recover! If your library gets corrupted, you'll feel hopeless.

LocaAlicia wrote:
I have only updated the library, but so far there seems to be no problem.

I take back my words. There was no problem updating the library in 10.7. Then, as soon as I pressed the color inspector icon to do color grading, it crashed! Dangerous!😱

Older versions of the library and FCP are backed up, so you can go back to them at any time. But I thought it was risky to add edits in 10.7. I would like to use the stable 10.6.10 for a while.
