I recently found an airpod. Is there a way to determine it’s series or version? Writing on underside is TOO small to read.

You will have to pair that AirPod to your iPhone with a case to get the detailed information on it. If you want to get the AirPod information without the case, then I recommend that you take a photo of the underside of the AirPod and then, while viewing the photo, enlarge/zoom until you see the serial number or other information.
You can always take the AirPod to the Apple Store or an Authorized Service Center and have them identify the AirPod.
