iOS App Store and incompatible apps?

How does the iOS App Store work? On my older iPad running an older version of iOS, if I try to install an app that requires a recent version of the OS, it will tell me so. It would be much better if it didn't even show me incompatible apps. Is there a way to change the settings so that it only shows me the apps that will run on my device and version of the OS?
