The latest firmware update for the gen1 AirPods is firmware version 6.8.8
See this to see your firmware version:
Go to Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the Info button next to the name of your AirPods. Scroll down to the About section to find the firmware version.
You cannot update the firmware manually. It will install automatically if the firmware is not up to date
