How to write division sign with iPhone and iPad

While texting on my iPad/iPhone sometimes I need to write out a division problem and there is not a key on the keyboard that has the division key symbol.

Example

500 divided by 40 = 12.5

The easiest way is to set up “Text Replacement”, on your keyboard settings.

Copy this symbol  ÷  first. (Tap long press to select and copy, same for paste)

Open the “Settings” on your iOS device, scroll down to “General”, scroll down to “Keyboard”, select “Text Replacement”.  Then select the + at top and on first text box paste the  ÷ symbol you copied, in second text box type the forward slash  /   and then select done.

So it will look like this:

and when typing forward slash / you select the ÷ symbol as shown:

that it.

This doesn’t work in the Notes app or this app either.

To insert the Unicode obelus ÷ (and if the text substitution mentioned above is not working), then you’ll need to use copy-and-paste as mentioned above, or install and use a third-party keyboard for iPhone or iPad.

Or a different app which does support text replacement.

Locally, I’ve used the Uni keyboard, though there are others available. (Uni lacks a search function, which can make finding some characters more effort. The obelus is in the Latin-1 supplemental block.)

Your keyboard on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac? Given this is the iPhone forum, I’ll assume iPhone or iPad.

There are several different symbols used for division in Unicode.

Some of the Unicode division characters that can encountered in the wild include:

  • ÷
  • /
  • etc

You’re probably referring to the obelus ÷ or maybe to the solidus /

Lots of folks use the slash / in place of the solidus, too.

How to enter those characters has been discussed in replies above, and may involve adding a keyboard on your iPhone or iPad. Or a shortcut in macOS. Not sure if a text replacement shortcut works in a passcode field on iPhone or iPad, though. (On iPhone and iPad, text replacement shortcuts are established in Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards, if you want to try that.)

One of the available keyboard options is mentioned in my reply above, as well. I usually use that Uni keyboard mentioned above for Unicode access.

Or you can change the password to something using less ambiguous and preferably easier-to-type characters, of course.
