iphone 12 mini not recognized by high sierra

apple documentation says the iphone 12 mini should work with high sierra. but i’m getting a message that itunes can’t connect to the iphone, the value is missing. i also get a message that a software update is required to connect to my iphone, but when i click install, it says installation failed, can’t download the software because of a network problem. the wifi on my laptop and phone are working fine.

i tried reinstalling the latest version of itunes, as another forum thread recommended, and have restarted the phone and computer. and still can’t get the phone recognized.

iphone 12 mini, ios 17.1.1,

early 2013 retina macbook pro,

mac os high sierra 10.13.6,

itunes 12.8.3.1

anyone able to solve this?

i googled and found this post:

Is iOS 17 compatible with itunes 12.8.2.3… - Apple Community

which pointed to this post:

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/461301/mac-os-10-13-6-and-newer-mobile-devices-not-working-with-itunes-12-8-3-1-mobiled/

i followed the instructions,

i downloaded xcode 15 from

Xcode 15 - Apple Developer

i unzipped it, went to show package contents, and navigated to:

xcode-beta.app/Contents/Resources/Packages/MobileDevice.pkg

and ran that package, as the instructions stated.

i quit itunes, unplugged the phone, reopened itunes, plugged the phone in, and now it's there.
