Can't connect to the software update server ((null)). TotalConsoleSearch malware

I was in the process of downloading the latest software on my iMAC when a sudden power outage occured. Upon restarting the system and attempting to download the latest version, I have been receiving the following message:

UNABLE TO CHECK FOR UPDATES

CAN'T CONNECT TO THE SOFTWARE UPDATE SERVER ((NULL)).

I have also been receiving a malware pop up saying "TotalConsoleSearch" will damage my computer, I downloaded the COMBO CLEANER anti-virus but it still keeps popping up. Could this malware be related to why I can't update the software
