Cross platform note taking and PDF annotating app

Hello,

Most of my work involves note-taking and reading long PDFs. Up until now, I've been using Xournal++ with an XP-Pen tablet on my Windows PC. However, I recently got an iPad and have been struggling to find an app that can support both Windows and iOS which would be a good alternative.

Here is a list of required features:

- basic pen writing (quick response time, color options, and thickness selection)

- strokes eraser and selection tool (as opposed to an eraser that erases pixels locally)

- ability to change the background color

- save notes as files on any cloud service (so I can access and edit notes on both PC and iPad)

- export notes as PDF, (for me this implies that the notes are separated into pages of standard A4 format)

- open and annotate on long PDFs, such as books

Optional features:

- basic geometric drawing tools (lines, circles, rectangles)

- presentation tool (similar to a pen, but with automatic disappearance of writings after a short delay)

- insert vertical space option

- ability to insert text using keyboard inputs

- preferably free to use, or even better, open source

If you have any recommendations for an app that would fit, I would greatly appreciate your suggestions (╯^̮^)╯

By the way, for those with similar needs but without the iPad constraint, I recommend Xournal++ (available on Linux & Windows).

Hi,

Finding the right cross-platform note-taking and PDF annotating app that fits your specific needs can indeed be a challenge. Based on your requirements, I have a couple of suggestions that might suit your workflow :

Given your requirements, I’d suggest checking out Noteshelf. It’s quite the handy app for iOS that offers a good range of pen options and a pleasant writing experience. It’s not exactly cross-platform in the sense of having a Windows app, but it does sync with cloud services, so you can access your notes on any device. Plus, it allows you to export your notes as PDFs, which ticks another box on your list.

For a more cross-platform experience, GoVisually might be worth a look. It’s designed to work across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, and it’s pretty solid for PDF annotations. It’s got a user-friendly interface and supports collaborative work, which is a bonus if you’re sharing your notes or PDFs with others.

Another one that’s caught my eye is UPDF. It’s a versatile app that’s available for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It’s not just for reading and editing PDFs but also includes note-taking features. It’s got a smooth interface and a simple setup, which could be just what you’re looking for.

While these suggestions aren’t open source, they do offer a range of features that align with your needs. And hey, most apps have a trial period, so you can take them for a spin before deciding if they’re the right fit for you. Hope this helps you in your quest for the perfect note-taking companion! 📝
