Apple Watch pairing and update issues

Watch series 3. Received the alert that I needed to update my watch, when I selected to start the update I then received a notification that I needed to unpair my watch and repair it before doing the update. I successfully unpaired it, but now it won’t re-pair with my phone. It will start the process, get to the “pair and update” screen, I select yes, it will show “pairing, this may take some time”, then all of a sudden it will say “unpairing Apple Watch, please wait” and I have to start over. I’ve done it about 10 times and it always does the same thing. Does anyone have any ideas?

Check the settings on both devices

If your phone has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth turned off — or if either of your devices are in Airplane Mode — they won't be able to pair. Make sure all settings are set properly to facilitate the connection. On the iPhone, you can quickly check this in the Control Center.

Also you might try restarting the iPhone and the watch.

If it still doesn’t work, try doing this:

Reset Apple Watch if the pairing process stalls

If it seems like the pairing process has stalled — for example, the pairing animation remains on the screen for several minutes — resetting your Apple Watch might help:

  1. Press and hold the Digital Crown while your Apple Watch is in pairing mode.
  2. Tap Reset when it appears on your watch.
  3. After your watch resets, you can pair again.
