Cancelling Airdrop copy while in progress

I was using Airdrop to copy a folder of video files from my MacBook to a new Mac mini both running Sonoma. At first the file transfers did not start five or six attempts. I did manage to get a successful Airdrop of the desired files.

However, now every time that both Macs are awake my five earlier attempts all begin again. I hear the chime that an Airdrop is beginning and five appear as "receiving" but I do not know how to cancel them completely. I can shut down the sender (MacBook) and then cancel/delete the uncompleted airdrop transfer on the receiving Mac (mini). However, the next time both machines are awake the same thing happens.

did you try toggling off wifi and/or bluetooth...(?)

I have certainly seen a message "Airdrop not able to complete" or some such warning.
