External CD/DVD drive compatible from a 2013 Mac to 2021 Mac?
I am upgrading from a 2013 Mac to a 2021 Mac. I have the external Apple CD/DVD drive which I want to be able to use with the upgraded Mac. Can I?
iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.15

You will need an adapter, because the new Mac does not feature USB A ports (the USB ports on the back of your old Mac) instead it features USB C ports and you cannot plug an USB A cable in an USB C port without using an adapter. Hope I have made the issue more clear (:

You can definitely use the Apple Superdrive with a 2021 Mac. You may need a USB A - USB C adapter, though. They are available at Apple...and there are plenty of others available on Amazon.
My dad is using this superdrive on his iMac with an USB C to USB A adapter from Apple. It was a gift for his birthday from me a few years back. Works like a charm
please see WheelieNick's reply. the 24" iMac has TB3 / USB-C ports. you will need a USB-C to USB Adapter as the superdrive has an USB-A connection.
Just to confirm....Wheelienick is correct in that you WILL need a USB A - USB C adapter. Apple has this one online and at most of their stores: Apple USB A to USB C Adapter. (I somehow got steered to bogus information when I was looking into this for you).

Right now the CD/DVD drive plugs directly into the back of the back. Do you think I will still need an adapter?
What are the details of your 2021 iMac? (Model, size, and year...available from the Apple menu-->About This Mac). I'd need to know this in order to look up what connections it has.
The Apple Superdrive requires a USB A connector. A lot of newer Macs have only USB C type connectors on them...hence my question.

The new one is a 24-inch iMac Apple M1 Chip with 8‑Core CPU and 7‑Core GPU from 2021. Does this help?
From the specs I was able to find for the 24 inch iMac, it has 2 USB 3 ports (in addition to 2 Thunderbolt ports), so your Superdrive shouldn't need an adaptor to plug into the 2021 iMac.
