It's because Apple did not include support for iPhone X in iOS 17.

So you will get any updates for iOS 16 (Security updates)

But you will not get iOS 17 and later.

Only apple knows why they opted to not include iPhone x for iOS 17 but they support their phones for about 6-8 years with the newest iOS historically.

The highest iOS version that can be installed on your iPhone X is iOS 16.x.x as you have learned.

Apple has discontinued support for the iPhone X model due to the lifecycle of technology. As new technologies emerge and new iPhone models are introduced with advanced features, older models become less capable of keeping up with the demands of new software and apps. This is a necessary step for Apple to continue delivering high-quality products and services. (Source: Macworld Magazine).

Planned obsolescence. 🫤

My ipad air and macbook pro have both aged out of receiving major operating system updates. They do still receive occasional security updates and apps are updated and remain functional.

My devices are both still operationally sound for everything I need to do - I just don’t receive access to new features included in newer OS iterations.
