Reinstalling Microsoft Office: mac 2011 after installing new SSD in MacBook Pro

adf1976 posed this question in February last year:

"I installed a new SSD in my 2011 Mac and migrated my files using a Time Machine back-up.

Now it seems that my MS Office 2011 won’t activate using the previous product key. MS is no longer supporting Office 2011 and suggests I upgrade to Office 2019 or 365 [$$$].

If I purchase MS office2011 will that work on the SSD. I am running Sierra 10.12.6 - reason I want 2011 is I am familiar with it and its cheaper?"

Responses to this question were basically no help.

I had a similar problem in that I had to revert from Big Sur to Mojave to let me use my 32 bit apps, but this meant my newly acquired Office: mac 2021 would not work and I tried to go back to Office: mac 2021 from Time Machine. I was asked for my key code which I keyed in from the original packaging, but was then asked to activate the product. You enter your Product Key, you click the “Activate” button… and you get a message about the activation server being unavailable and a recommendation to try again later. You try again later and it still doesn’t work. So you try by phone and the phone number has changed. The new phone number directs you to Microsoft's help site which doesn't, since they've stopped supporting this product.

Responses from the community do not help since they basically say "no go, you're done with Microsoft if you want to get the 2011 product running again". However, One-minute Macman has a solution (and I hope he doesn't mind me directing anyone to his webpage) ****

He has a link here to a Microsoft webpage which can't be googled. Thanks to him, my old program is back and running.

The license you were using in Office 2011 was tied to your previous drive UUID code and you would have been fine if you had restored Office 2011 back to the same drive. Now, with a replacement drive, you are done as Microsoft has disabled their license servers for all retired products (including Office 2019). That means you can not activate any installation of Office 2011 whether the one you have or a new purchase.

Microsoft now requires macOS Monterey, Ventura, or Sonoma to activate Office 2021 for Mac, or Microsoft 365 applications.

I did activate Office 2021 for Mac on big Sur (early October) and it worked. I found I had more 32 bit programs that I use on a regular basis that I really need and these do not run on Big Sur, so I somewhat reluctantly went back to Mojave with a restore from Time Machine (by the way, when I said I tried to go back to Office 2021 for Mac, I meant Office 2011 in my post). Telephone support from Microsoft for this product has ended (at least in Australia in my case). If you google "How to activate Microsoft Office 2011 for the Mac" and ignore the Microsoft pages, you can find a page and then a link to a Microsoft page from where you can download a new **.licensing.plist file and then use this to overwrite the existing plist file in your Library/preferences folder. I don't know how long this Microsoft page will be up (and they keep it hidden), but I got my licensed copy of Office 2011 for Mac back up and running when official support from Microsoft had vanished. I don't know what features were new in the 2021 version, the only differences I noticed in the short time I was using it were that the location of the buttons for various functions had changed and I had to spend a bit more time searching for them.
