Un- linking iPod from iPhone and iPad

I’d like to remove music from my iPhone and keep it exclusively on my (older) iPod, thus freeing up much needed space. The three devices are currently linked together. Can I un-link the iPod?

Each device can be independent of the others.

If you're using iTunes (or Finder) to manage the content of the devices, then instead of syncing entire music library to every device, use Sync selected playlists, artists, albums and genres to add only what you want to each device.

Connect the device that you wish to remove music from to your iTunes Library. Using the screenshot below:

  • in iTunes, select the Device/Settings/Music pane (1.)

  • make sure that Sync Music (2.) is already selected. If it isn't post back for assistance
  • choose selected playlists, artists, albums and genres (3.)
  • select only the items that you want on that specific device, from the sections numbered 4 (that is the Playlists, Artist, Albums and Genres lists). Note that these sections are not visible until you opt for selected playlists, artists, albums and genres in 3 above
  • tap the Apply (or Sync) button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window (not shown in the screenshot)
