It happens frequently, perhaps while using applications such as Pages, Chrome, etc., and especially when I simply close the display instead of shutting down. Once I open the display again, I can see a message stating, "Your computer restarted because of a problem... Battery condition is 'Service Recommended.'

"watchdog" panics are most commonly a hardware error. Although it can be a fault in the processor, others have recommended checking these as potential software causes:

  • anti-virus or so-called "cleaning" apps that interfere with elegant protection and self-maintenance routines you paid Apple to build into the OS
  • some ad blocker extensions
  • a too-full storage drive

Does this occur on a regular basis, or while using certain apps? IF the latter please share with us the use conditions under which this has happened.

If it is a hardware issue, you will need Apple to evaluate.
