System Data is a catch-all for things Spotlight cannot place in other categories. Reindex Spotlight to make sure it isn’t miscategorizing your data as System Data.

Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support


If it is not that, it could be local Time Machine snapshots. Plug in your backup drive and allow it to transfer and clear those.


This can also appear if you have deleted a large amount of data. Since the storage on an SSD isn’t immediately available, it might be shown as System Data until it is reset (overnight perhaps).


Another possibility is runaway logs or temp files.
