The following sequence will change the shortname, when followed exactly.

Have a complete backup first.

Have a spare Admin login, as well.

Change the name of your macOS user account and home folder - Apple Support

Failing to follow the Apple instructions as written can end badly, unfortunately.

On various occasions, I’ve used the steps as documented. The results have worked.

I’ve also encountered folks that have tended to be… unmethodical. Variously with no backups, too. Those favoring “IT free-styling” have sometimes had results less than entirely successful.
