Phone turns black when something is near camera on FaceTime

So recently whenever I am on a FaceTime call and I have something near my camera (whether it’s a blanket or my finger dragging down the notification center), my phone screen turns black. This happens outside of the FaceTime app as if I’m on a phone call and the side of my face would be up against my phone. I don’t know if this is intentional.

It is intentional when the phone is near your face while on a phone call. It is controlled by the proximity sensor. The screen is darkened while on a phone call to reduce the battery power used to light the screen.
