iMac regularly stops recognising external HDDs

Good day!

Here is the problem... All my iMacs (late 12, late 13) and MacBooks (early 11, mid 15) have the same "feature": from time to time they stop recognising external HDD. HDD connected, the light blinks, there is operating noise, but even Disk Utility app can not see it. At the same time, if you connect this external HDD to Windows, the disk is detected, but all the files on it are in “read-only” status and there is no possibility of writing to the disk.

If I format the disk again, iMacs begin to see it again. Then after 20-30 connections iMac stops recognizing it again.

I tried all sorts of external HDDs - this problem repeats with every of them.

I have no problems with Flash USB, SD-cards or external M.2 SSD.

Has anyone encountered such a problem?

You want us to comment on a MS Windows box? They don’t because they don’t, it’s that simple. Now that you understand they need more power than what your Mac provides you can order according and move on. Sorry to sound unsympathetic and that isn’t the case it just that sympathy doesn’t help fix the issue.

I think t just takes one blip & there won't be enough mA to keep everything running... least that seems to be what is happening when running close to the limits with multiple drives. :)

FWIW, Windows seems to handle USB mA better.
