cant restore my ipad

I set up my new ipad with a passcode and when i went back to use it the passcode i thought i used didnt work

we tried following the directions on how to restore an ipad using itunes on the computer and the computer doesn't recognize the ipad. The symbol never appears where its suppose to, and i cannot proceed with the process.
