Envelope icon in email attachments in Sonoma 14.1.2?

Why do my email attachments have an envelope icon now in Sonoma 14.1.2?

Is this new? Is there a way to disable this because if I accidentally click on the icon it brings up the email which is not something I need to do. Much appreciated.

This is one of those examples of over-engineering, a desperate lack of ideas or underutilized developers. In my opinion, it's complete nonsense that I would like to switch off in the settings. Since Apple obviously doesn't want that, here's my solution: use a different email program. That's how I did it. I work a lot with files and didn't want to do any more extra work in the Finder.

Weird! I've an iMac with macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 aboard.

I've found that the little button/tag show also in the file info window. So if I see a file with that tiny annoying icon I can use CMND-i for the file info window and just below the file name the tag is showed. Left-click on it show the contextual menu with the Remove command. Hope you find it.

Ciao :-)

Work around for removing email icon AND show file size in preview window:

Select the file(s) you want need > Right click for contextual menu > select Quick Actions > Convert Image (image 1)

> here it shows the file type and options for sizes to "Save As" (image 2)

> this creates a duplicate (image 3)- that shows the file size and no email icon. The down side - a duplicate to delete unless you Need the email link.

I NEED to see the file size at a glance - clicking Cmd+I 20-80 times a day on images emailed from clients is ridiculous.

Apple - why would you remove the file size from the finder preview?

Thanks, this is the Finder. A friend sent me these two files and now they're attached to Apple Mail. So when I open the Finder and look at the list of files I see the envelope icon next to them. And if I accidentally click on the envelope icon it opens the email where he sent them. I thought this might be something new in the latest OS. I tried to disable it by renaming the file but to no avail.

Well, I can not reproduce any facsimile of that in Finder...

I can only guess that is in the downloads folder...(?)

Have no idea what Finder view this is....(?)

what I can say is don't click the envelope if it is an issue.

or

try switching to List view and compare your results

Hi There,

if someone hasn't already answered, I've found a way to break the link and delete the envelope icon.

As you can see from the attached image, in column view there's a tiny button/tag that show the link with the email message it came from. With the mouse left click it show a contextual menu with shortlink for Show (the attach) in Mail app, Reply to the email message and Remove the link to the attach. This third choice delete the little envelope icon too.

Ciao ;-)

Thanks, this is the Finder. A friend sent me these two files and now they're attached to Apple Mail. So when I open the Finder and look at the list of files I see the envelope icon next to them. I also find it a cumbersome intrusion, this icon next to the filename.

I could regard it as an additional clue, just like colored labels. But since it interacts with the iCloud status icon as well, I was wondering if it's indicating that it's not a real physical file but just a reference (like an alias) to the actual file, residing in my mail archive. So... will it still be retrievable when I've thrown away the email ?
