can I put all the photos from my mac onto a hard drive?

I have upgraded my Mac, but the new computer has less memory than the old computer. I can't migrate the information at the moment, until I reduce the amount. Can I transfer all the pictures/movies to an external hard drive to reduce it to an acceptable size, and then plug the external hard drive into the new computer?
