Is it possibile to use a target display with iMac late 2012 running macOS Catalina and as source a MacBook Air 2020 running macOS Sonoma?

According to Apple article,

• "The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
• The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed."

So you can't use your iMac as second monitor for your MacBook Air.

Even if the OP bought $80 of Thunderbolt connection hardware (Apple TB3-to-2 adapter + a TB 1/2 cable), it wouldn't work. The 2020 MacBook Air couldn't use ANY iMac as a Target Display Mode display.

All the Thunderbolt connection would be good for is data transfer, if that.

The short answer is no you can't.

You could use third-party solutions such as Luna Display, Duet Display, AirServer, etc.

I would try AirServer first. They have a 30 day free trial and it's the least expensive.
