Time Machine Backup

After having issues migrating my data from my 2013 (late) iMac to my new refurbished 2021 MBP I was advised to do a Time Machine backup of my iMac as a workaround. My previous is after 2 days the backup has only transferred 2gigs of 1T. Another advisor told me to just wait. Are there any other options? Thanks.

Backup without using TimeMachine? I am using Big Sur 11.7 as a higher update was not possible (in the Apple shop) they wanted to do it in 2 steps, but after the first step all my data was gone from my MacBook Pro (2019) - and since then I cannot do a backup with TimeMachine, its just not doing it. Apple Support recommends an upgrade but the last time everything was gone and its some time now and the old backup is missing a lot. Also there was not everything recovered, they said that the backup was probably never done properly. So how can I save my data before upgrading?

iMac Time Machine first backup to new SSD First backup to a new SSD was extremely slow. I have a 2017 Intel 21.5 iMac running Ventura 13.7.8 with an HDD of 1TB, but only have about 350 Gig being used. I do my Time machine backups to a couple of 500 Gig external HDD (one in my desk one in a safe). I am getting ready to replace this iMac and thought I would buy a 1TB SSD, do a full backup, and be ready to use it to restore onto my new iMac. The new SSD is 1 TB and claims speeds of "up to" 1050 Mega BYTES per second. I connected the SSD and made sure it mounted and was properly formatted. It is connected to my iMac via UCB-C ports. The new SSD claims it is USBC 3.2 gen 2. This first full backup of 350 Gig to a clean SSD took 4 hours and 10 minutes. Given the transfers rates of my machine and the new SSD, I foolishly thought the backup would take about 15 minutes, not over 4 hours. Is this typical? If so, why does Time Machine take so long?

Best external backup for new iMac Mid 2010 iMac finally crashed. I need to replace my 1T Seagate external backup with new unit that will be compatible with new iMac. I am using 288GB of 494GB storage available on new iMac. first question is: do I need a Mac with more storage? second question is: what do you recommend for a new external backup device? I’m fairly technical but would appreciate easy to understand response. Thanks in advance.

It's possible the hard disk is failing. Hard disks generally last 3-5 years, so it may be time to replace it.

As a test, try to copy a regular, larger file to the external disk and see if the disk can write it.

I'd suggest trying the Samsung SSD.

Hey there!

No, it should not be taking that long. Something is either not working quite right with your iMac or external hard disk.

What is the model of the external backup disk, and how old is it?
