Since iOS 17 CarPlay became too dark in day mode. Even when blur background came back with iOS 17.2 is still too dark during daylight especially on a sunny day.
I noticed this in my car. I checked the Settings app in CarPlay and found there is an additional setting there to determine the dark mode and it seemed to correct things for me.
I agree. What happened to the light mode? When the appearance tab is set to Automatic in CarPlay settings, it’s only light mode in the settings because when you play any media that uses the cover art and blurred background, we still only get dark mode with white text and white buttons instead of during the daytime we’d have a white background with the album cover bleeding through the white background alongside the cover art in CarPlay, and with black text and black buttons. I don’t like this new design in iOS 17.2. The design the way it looked on iOS 16 was way better, in my opinion. On iOS 17.2 when you play any media, it’s always on dark mode. I dislike it. I wish Apple would revert back to the iOS 16 design because that was better looking than the design on iOS 17.2.
Not sure if 100% same issue, but my phone no longer allows any CarPlay it attached to to use light mode. Always in dark mode since iOS 17.2 (now on 17.2.1). Tried in multiple cars, and on each the settings in CarPlay (on the car screen) always toggles back and forth to make sure “always dark” is turned off. Unfortunate there isn’t an option to select “always light” so at least you could manually override the auto issue.
Having this issue on 17.4.1. Carplay is set to Automatic appearance, and all privacy system/time zone location settings are enabled. The car is a 2012 Honda Fit without automatic headlights or ambient sensor, and no interior brightness console brightness adjustment. In Google and Apple Maps, the theme does change with headlights on/off, it's just that the rest of Carplay is stuck in Dark mode, even after adjusting the head unit's Dimmer settings, updating the head unit firmware, and restarting the phone.

Same. 17.3 didn’t fix anything. To Chris’s point above the settings app in CarPlay only allow for always dark or auto. Both are now always dark for me.
