Is Apple Pencil 1st generation really the only option for iPAD Pro 10.5 (2017)? My Apple Pencil is dead and I want to upgrade, but the compatibility is in question.

As far as Apple Pencils are concerned, yes, it's the only option.
You can serach the Internet for a 3rd party pencil, but we can't give you any guarantees.

One last question: I see that Apple still sells the 1st gen Apple pencil, but when investigating the purchase of a replacement, no option for an AppleCare+ plan was given. Is it that the pencil is too old that it is no longer supported by plans? My concern is that the battery of a "new" 1st gen Apple pencil will be also dead because of a lengthy shelf life. Valid concern or are there guarantees/warranties available?
