mid-2012 mac can't update to newer OS

Hi, I'm trying to upgrade to a newer OS but can't succeed in it. I'm currently using macOS Catalina (10.15.7) on MacBook Pro (mid-2012).

I've tried to upgrade to Sonoma from App Store, but I keep getting an error "the requested version of macOS is not available.". Is it not possible with an older mac to upgrade to a newer OS? I remember this same issue happening with Monterey and Ventura too (and thus I'm stuck with Catalina).

The computer hardware works just fine (despite being a grand old mac!), and it would be a huge shame to stop using it just because there is no newer macOS available for an elder hardware.

Catalina is the highest possible upgrade for a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. See the following from Identify your MacBook Pro model - Apple Support

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012)

Model Identifier: MacBookPro10,1

Newest compatible operating system: macOS Catalina

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012)

Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,1

Part Numbers: MD103xx/A, MD104xx/A

Newest compatible operating system: macOS Catalina

You may want to use a 3rd party internet browser that supports running their current version on your Mac. One option is Chrome: https://www.google.com/chrome/
