MacBook Pro M3 Pro screen brightness buttons don't work

(Update: figured out how to get this to work. See the second paragraph.)

Cmd+F1 and Cmd+F2 do not change laptop screen brightness on November 2023 MacBook Pro M3 Pro. I have tried disabling and enabling "Automatically adjust brightness" and "True Tone" in Display settings. No luck. The other shortcut keys appear to work; for example, Cmd+F10, Cmd+F11, Cmd+F12 mute, decrease, and increase speaker volume. I even tried selecting a different Preset in Display settings, Apple XDR Display (P3-600 nits). The default is Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits). Neither selection makes a difference. Night Shift is off (default). I also tried disabling keyboard shortcuts for Display, which is F14 to decrease display brightness and F15 to increase display brightness, which are strange function key defaults since the laptop keyboard only has 12 function keys. I assume that's for an external Apple Magic Keyboard which I don't have; just the laptop keyboard. Nothing seems to work.

Solution: modify the keyboard shortcuts for Function Keys and toggle on "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys". Now you I can change screen brightness with fn+F1 and fn+F2 (not cmd+F1 and cmd+F2).

To get to the keyboard shortcuts, go to System Settings > Keyboard, select "Keyboard Shortcuts..." button, then Function Keys. Alternatively open Spotlight Search with Cmd+space and search for "Keyboard Shortcuts".
