Why do I have to give a card number simply to update free apps? I am not putting a card on this phone! I don’t have any subscriptions! I will not subscribe to any ever!!!

A card is needed for ID purposes and in-app purchases. You will not be charged for free apps but you do need a payment method on file with Apple.
If you don't want to use a credit card, you can try an Apple gift card.
