McAfee is messing with my computer's performance. Is there a "BEST" security software for MAC and/or is APPLE security stand alone enough?

I am new to Apple, well returning from a long long sabbatical on the dark side. I have installed McAfee security on my iMAC, Macbook Pro Air 15" and IPhone 13 and while they are all updated to Sonoma, except the iMac because apparently it's not worthy, and all of them are having issues. They run slower, they crash more and the internet is now sketchy at best. I had been attributing it to Sonoma's Beta, but now I can't do that because my iMac isn't on it!

So, is there a better software? I hear good things about Intego, but I have also heard that Apple security is one of the best stand alone. No software needed. Thoughts? Advice? Appreciate the help!

Uninstall McAfee. Third party apps that claim to protect, clean, manage, etc. are not needed and may cause problems. And such apps use system resources while providing no benefit.

There's a PDF of that entire website at the bottom of the page.

Some of the better-known add-on anti-malware for macOS was caught selling online activities and online purchasing data. Other vendors selling that same or other info would not be a particular surprise. Some of the rest badly solves a problem that really hasn't really existed for a decade or so, but is perfectly positioned to collect personally-identified metadata, and some of the "no logs kept" services were caught logging when the "non-existent" logs leaked onto the 'net.

And that's all before discussing performance and stability issues—the built-in anti-malware has blocked cases of add-on anti-malware trying to delete parts of macOS.

On macOS, Apple provides Gatekeeper and app notarization, a read-only system volume, ongoing scans with XProtect and removal with XProtect Remediator, two-factor authentication, among other mechanisms.

Typical problem sources in recent years have involved password re-use, weak or compromised passwords, phishing, torrents and cracked apps, adware, and related. And add-on security apps.

macOS, iOS, and iPadOS are not immune. And there's no panacea. But it does pretty well.
