apple watch not tracking exercise durring skating

So I play roller derby and trail skate a lot. Often times practices last for 2-3 hours, and I'm burning tons of calories, and am physically exhausted after words. I also bike, and am less exhausted after going 40-60 miles, so I know I'm getting in a good workout at derby. The watch tracks properly while biking or running though.

But after a full practice session, or trail skating for 4-8 miles, I look at my rings, and not only did it not record any exercise, but it didn't record any steps either.

Things I've tried-

  • Make sure the watch band is snug but not too tight.
  • Don't wear the watch on top of any tattoos.(Very important)
  • Check that the 2 side buttons aren't being accidently pressed by your hand or a sleeve
  • On your iPhone, go to Settings, then tap on Privacy and then select Location Services option and ensure that it is enabled.
  • On the Location Services section, tap on System Services and then toggle the Motion Calibration & Distance option to enable it.
  • Then go back to the Home Screen of your iPhone and launch the Watch app. Then, tap on My Watch option, then tap on Privacy and toggle the Heart Rate option to enable it. Go back to My Watch section, then tap on Passcode, and toggle the Wrist Detection option to enable it.
  • Selecting skating, hockey, hiking, and outdoor running as the workout

The only thing I can think of is I use my watch to control the music during practices, so tabbing out of workout to stop/start etc is messing it up? But I do the same thing while biking and running, and it seems to work fine.
