I have an airmac from 2008 I’m wanting to pass down to my daughter. Do I need to come in for it to be upgraded and set as a new computer or can I do it?

2008? Is that a typo of 2018?

The original 2008 Macbook Air is too old to upgrade the software to anything mainstream and modern. An AppleStore is not going to be able to help, except to take it in for recycling. Either recycle it or keep it in a box with the hope it will one day be a collectors item.

For a 2018 Macbook Air you can update the software and transfer the mac yourself.

  1. Make a backup of your data in case you ever need it again.
  2. If you are running Big Sur or older upgrade to Monterey or newer. This will ensure your daughter starts with current security patches and will also make step 3 easier. How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
  3. What to do before you sell, give away, trade in, or recycle your Mac - Apple Support
