Wireless Continuity Camera Connection Problem

The only way I can connect my iphone camera (11 or XS Max) wirelessly to Facetime on my Mac Mini is by first connecting via USB cable, then pause, remove cable, and resume wirelessly.

I don't see that procedure on the apple website and I'm pretty sure I connected wirelessly without any problem before (before the most recent Sonoma update).

I've been trying for the past two hours to get some knowledgeable technical phone support about this issue without any success so far.

A further update: after spending another hour with another support person the problem persists but I did discover that I can connect via USB cable and then disconnect the cable and the wireless connection takes over. However, I still cannot initiate the connection wirelessly. Apple support hasn't been able to resolve this issue. My guess is it's something to do with the latest 14.2 update as I wasn't having this problem before. Even the wired connection is not consistent. When I tried to connect this morning it wasn't working and I had to restart the computer.
