Remove background feature no longer working
It was 100% reliable in Ventura and has simply stopped in Sonoma. Every now and then it does work but it seems random. Sometimes it will even make the noise signal but nothing happens

Does not work at all. Makes a noise sometimes as if it's working but nothing happens. Most often there's no noise at all and no action either. Once in a while it will work but that's an anomaly. Doesn't;t matter if you use the right click "Quick Actions" feature, Preview or the toggle at the bottom of the finder screen. In preview it dies two thing. Sometimes the remove background feature is greeted out and not accessible at all. Other times it's there but it does nothing.

verify your software is up to date…
The current stable release of Sonoma including bug fixes, security updates is macOS 14.2
Keep your Mac up to date - Apple Support
I had this same issue, and then I ran the following command in the Terminal app: (don't worry, it's harmless)
killall Finder && killall Dock
Then I tried Remove Background again, and it worked.
Update to Sonoma 14.2 and try again. What does no longer working mean? It removes some but not all background, or it fails entirely? What starting image type?
This Quick Action works on my images, primarily PNG, on macOS Sonoma 14.2.
FWIW, I have to qualify my last post. Sometimes, I have to apply "Remove Background" to an image more than once before it works. No idea why.
FWIW, "Remove Background" will not work if there's not enough difference in the "foreground" & "background".

Some typos there but I'm sure you get my drift.
Exactly the same here.
It has nothing to do with being up to date. I am alway up to date and this issue has been present since Sonoma 14. Updating (now 14.2.1) does not fix it.
@dialabrain - sorry, this is not the problem. We're talking about "Remove Background" not working *at all*, including with images that worked perfectly in Ventura.
Okay, all I can say is it works fine on my three installs of Sonoma. Two iMac Pro installs and one M1 MacBook Air.
