Native macOS support for legacy Apple displays appears to have returned

A vexing problem for many users has been the lack of native macOS support for legacy Apple displays. This most often manifested as the inability to control display brightness. Users had to rely on third-party apps or deal with monitors stuck at low brightness levels. There were other issues as well, depending on the display. This problem was particularly annoying for users because Apple displays, even legacy ones, are often far superior in quality and performance for their use cases than other manufacturers' displays.

I'd like to report that as of at least macOS Sonoma 14.2, native macOS support for my c. 2009 legacy Apple 24-inch LED Cinema Display has returned for my M2 macbook pro. Brightness is controllable through display settings as well as the menu bar. There's also a new icon in display settings matching the appearance of the display.

The decision to bring back support for (at least this) Apple legacy displays is very appreciated.
