Unable to print using HP printer post macOS Sonoma update.

My HP was printing ok on my Mac laptop using WiFi. The printer is connected to a Mac desktop

but suddenly I can no longer print any documents as they on "Hold for Authentication". There have been some power spikes and both the printer and desktop have restarted. I have checked the keychain and there is no password shown for the hp printer. I clicked the refresh button on the document waiting but nothing changes. I have reset the printer, rebooted my laptop but still I cannot remove the authentication on hold. The OS was recently updated to Sonoma 14.1.2 HELP

There's a workaround that went well for me. I entered printer's admin page. In network settings there is a section for IPP printing, where I created a user and password. Next, on Mac I sent the document for printing and when I received a message to authenticate I used the credentials of that on-printer created user (checked remember password). That printed me the document. Next, in the key-registry I deleted all other records that were found by keywords "hp" (it could be some other id in your case) and left only the one with the data of the above mentioned user (if you don't do that, macos gives the priority to local records, and that leads to the authentication message, and you have to type printer's user name again and again). From that point on printing goes seamlessly. No users or passwords asked.

I finally have the problem fixed and I can now print. I deleted the printer from both the laptop and computer. Then I turned off the printer. Next step was to turn off the WiFi modem. I then reversed process: Turn on modem, turn on printer, add printer to desktop Mac and finally add printer to laptop Mac. No more hold for authentication. Hooray.

Sorry that didn't help. You still didn't answer my question about, whether not, this printer (connected to your Mac desktop) is sharing this printer? I am assuming that answer would be "yes" ... correct?

If that is the case, is this desktop assigned either a static IP address or one assigned by your router's DHCP reservation? The reason I ask is if it is configured as "Using DHCP" (the default), other devices on the network may not always be able to "find" it.

I just updated to the latest version of Sonoma (April 2024) on a 2018 Mac Mini with USB cable to an HP LaserJet and printer sharing on for everybody. I have only had this problem for the last two versions of Sonoma when accessing from a MacBook using BigSur 11.7.10

I have gone through all the posted solutions from deleting the job, resetting the printer, removing and adding the printer, looking in Keychain Access for any job or driver or password with HP or printer in it.

I connected several ways to the Mac Mini including using the registered user account on the Mini, nothing works.

Any advice welcome!

Thank you lkrupp and Tesserax for trying to help.

These basic steps have been tried several times, together with other more complex steps suggested on other threads. None resolve the problem. For example, I reset the printing system on each of, alone, and then on both simultaneously, client and printer-host Mac.

I note that the Mac OS Sonoma printer problem exists with a number of printers according to other threads. The problem only began with updates in the Sonoma series 14.4 on the printer-host side.

In the end it’s the responsibility of printer manufacturers to keep their products up to date with changes in macOS. If Apple had to wait for every accessory manufacturer out there to get their acts together there would be no macOS updates at all. Printer manufacturers (all of them) are notorious for abandoning their older hardware in terms of driver updates and such.

It’s no consolation but Windows users can experience the same issues. I know Windows users who had to wait weeks for driver updates. My wife’s older HP laptop’s CD/DVD drive stopped working after a Windows update. It took our son over four hours to find and install a driver that restored its operation.
