I am unable to add songs to existing playlist post Sonoma update

I am also having this issue - ie I can't add to existing playlists, only to new ones. You can drag and drop but can't add using the menu option, which is annoying. I found one workaround, which is to export a playlist and then import it - this creates a new version of the playlist, preserving its content, and once you do that you can add as you could before. One annoying thing is you end up with 2 playlists with the same name - if you edit the .xml file after exporting but before importing you can edit the playlist name at that stage so it imports as a clearly-labelled new version

I did the trick I found here of duplicating my playlists, deleting the original, and renaming the duplicate to match the original name and that worked. It was an inconvenience at worst but a quick fix since I only had a few playlists.

I upgraded from MacOS 13 to MacOS 14.3 this past week and I have this problem. I can drag and drop to put a song on an existing playlist but the ability to right click and add to a playlist seems to be gone

I'm seeing this too (Dec 16 2023), after not having edited a playlist in a few months. wth? I am very sure that right-click list used to show all playlists, or at least allow me to navigate to pick from existing PLs.

FYI, you can still drag-n-drop a song into playlists in the left nav bar.

Update: 14.4 now, and this is now working properly on my system.

Seems to work for me. I have 5 current non smart playlist.

Click on "..." next to song title and select add playlist, you will have options to create new playlist or add to existing playlist.

I'm having the same problem.

The add-to-playlist option in the contextual menu used to show a list of all your playlists. I can still add songs to playlists by clicking-and-dragging onto the playlist, but obviously, that's a clumsier workaround.

Bugs happen. Hopefully they'll fix it soon. It does seem that Music's song-library functionality is a low priority for Apple compared to the Apple Music subscription service. They'd be perfectly happy if we all abandoned our libraries, I think - but I have too many tracks that will never be on a subscription service.

This is super annoying!! Yes you can drag and drop, but the old way is easier and faster, what is wrong with you Apple?

other possibility, a bit annoying depending on the amount of playlists you might have ...

Right click on a playlist, select "Duplicate", il will create another playlist called "Playlist - Copy". Delete the old playlist, rename the "Playlist - Copy" into "Playlist" and the playlist will appear as before.

My playlists have been created at various times. One is over 12 months old with one updated in the last week.

Try holding down option+cmd when you next launch Music. This opens the app in its safe mode and can do some housekeeping which may sometimes help.

I'm having this issue, also. I thought it was because I transferred my library from an older Mac. I just thought I was doing something wrong. The drag-n-drop does work, it's just slower.

I've just discovered I had this problem today.

I followed what bradm0 said and produced a Copy of the Playlist, then I can add the recently downloaded songs onto that.
