Mac Studio Harddrive is almost full with System D

I have an M1 Mac Studio with a 500GB harddrive. I have almost all my documents, music, and photos on an external harddrive and suddenly I got a message saying the harddrive was full. When I do a system check it shows 473 of 494 GB are used. The graph bar shows documents, applications, mail and OS take up about 20% of the data and the rest of the 473 GB is system data. What on earth is going on here? What system data could use that much space? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Even though you have solved your problem for now, this article suggests several free tools that can help you FIND those big Boat anchor sized files and directories. They just identify -- they modify NOTHING. Removing the stuff they find is up to you.
