How to clear stopwatch indicator?

I'm a new Apple Watch user with a Series 9. When I start the stopwatch, I get a pulsating orange indicator at the top of the watch face. My problem is that indicator doesn't always clear after the stopwatch is reset to zero. I have the always-on-display option set.

I've seen posts in other forums that recommended either killing the stopwatch app or putting my arm down so the display dims. Neither works for me. Occasionally the indicator clears on its own, but sometimes the only way I can clear it is to turn the watch off and on again.

Is there a reliable method to clear the indicator, or is this a bug? It happens to me both with 10.1 and 10.2.
